Default HUD unit repair

It took two evenings, but I finally managed to pull out my dead HUD unit. (It's an '06, it began shaking a couple of years ago and eventually stopped working completely.)

* Made in Japan??? Japanese-made quality sure went down since the 80's.

* There used to be a transparent sheet of plastic blocking the opening. It broke into pieces and fell inside.

* The mirror is supposed to be held in place by two plastic brackets. It fell off, one of the brackets was loose. Brackets were attached to the case with screws; plastic around all screw holes was badly worn.

* All screw heads are badly corroded.

Why would it get that bad in 7 years.

Looks like I'll need to patch and re-drill screw holes in brackets, buy new screws, reassemble, cut out a new lexan cover and put it over the opening.

There's a sheet of some kind of weird material glued to top of the unit opposite the opening, not even sure how to describe it. It's hard but rough to touch. In my unit, it's all cracked and unsightly. Does anyone know what it is, why it is there and whether I can scratch it off or cover it with something?
