Default Where is your Trans Cooler ?

I have a 2005 C6 (A4) with a 2800 converter AND a VARARAM CAI, The car runs fine but once I put in the 2800 converter, & an aftermarket trans cooler, the engine and trans have started to run about 10 - 15 deg hotter, & in traffic I have seen my trans temp go as high as 210 - 212 deg..

As soon as I get moving 30 + mph it will cool down to 190 - 195 deg.. The aftermarket cooler is mounted on the AC condenser right behind the Vararam air intake that runs from the air intake at the front grill to the MAF...

I was thinking of moving the trans cooler someplace where it can get some better air flow to keep the trans cooler...

Need some suggestions ?? Anyone mount the cooler someplace else

You could remove the rear valence or "diffuser" and put it somewhere in the back.

If you remove the valence and like the look (I do), you can trim the rear fender liners so they dont look like mudflaps and this will give you car a more aggressive look (you can see more tire and all the suspension parts) while helping the aero out as well...

Plenty of blower guys pull a foglight and put them there. Or you can have a front brake duct channel air onto the cooler behind the fog light.

A 165 degree T stat helps. For reference, my daily driver is a cammed Pontiac G8 with a Yank 3200 SS converter and B&M Cooler. The highest my trans-temp has ever got was 180 degrees, and that was on a 102 degree day in traffic. A good tuner will also adjust your fans to come on to keep it cool.

I like that idea... gonna be installing a ported FAST 102 intake on Wed of next week.. while its at the shop I'll see if you idea can be done... I "THINK" my cooler is about 11"x11" its a "stacked plate type"

If it fits there is it PROTECTED from road debris, or stuff that is in the road... Also I'd put some kind of screen in front of it to prevent leaves from blocking it... I did that with my egg crate grill, & the bottom of the front grill..

I get "NO" leaves or debris on my radiator OR AC Condenser... I want to keep the new Trans cooler protected from "stuff" on the road.. & keep leaves and plastic bags etc...etc.. from blocking it...

I have a 160 T Stat..and a 2800 converter, I "THINK" my problem is the aftermarket cooler is mounted directly behind the air intake of my Vararam intake..

I was thinking of trying to just move the cooler 10" - 12" to the left or right so it will get more direct air.. I think the Vararam might be blocking the air... I have a manual fan switch to run my fans so I CAN do that , also the fans have been reprogrammed to turn on at 192 deg. I think that is the lowest they can be set to...

If its possible, I think it would be a LOT LESS $$ to just move my current cooler and less work than to buy & install a new type of CAI..

The Vararam has given me a nice improvement in ET, so I really don't want to remove it, then sell it at a loss of $ and buy another type of CAI..

I have my B&M cooler mounted in the same place, and it seems that my car is running 10-15 degrees hotter. The transmission now runs 15 degrees less than my coolant temps.

jpee this is how Toms is, have Roy make it work

The view is from the front of the car and the cooler is mounted in between the bumper cover and the lower bumper pan. Take out 5 screws to open a gap for the cooler, then put 4 screws back in. No other mounting brackets are required. The cooler takes up the space between the bumper cover and the bottom of the condenser and in front of the air dam that forces the air up through it.

You can get the temps up over 200, but you really have to try hard to do that even here in Phoenix. I can get coolant to 220+ pretty easy (160 stat and fan 90% at 201), but 200 on the trans is rare.

Please overlook the dirty underside on my 110K mile DD. I've cleaned it since the pic.
this is how it should be just like Toms the air comes up from the air dam

if he cant make it work their because of it being 11x11, have him move it low and to the passenger side of the radiator

Does your trans fluid still go through the radiator also, or is it using only the aftermarket cooler?

Although you coolant temp gauge may be showing something around 220, the stock trans cooler is sitting in coolant that has gone through the radiator and is much cooler than what your engine gauge indicates. So if you're not using it right now, a simple test would be to re-hose things so that the trans fluid is going through both coolers. Let us know...

YES.. I have it set up so the trans fluid goes through the OEM cooler in the radiator first THEN it goes through the aftermarket cooler..

My "thinking" is the OEM cooler will cool it down some... then the aftermarket cooler will cool it some more...

I think the aftermarket cooler is not getting enough fresh air because its mounted directly behind the Vararam intake... I plan on moving the new cooler off to the side so its in a "direct" flow of fresh air...

jpee mine is hooked behind the vararam two just like yours, but i run directly to that cooler and bypass the radiator cooler, and my temps run cool

get the cooler with the fan attached. This is driver side facing the front, also have the driver side fog light shimmed back to let air in.
