It was WAY worse than just that. The heads had been off of the car (not sure why a "supposedly" low mile LS3 'take out' engine would have to have been taken apart like that?) and reinstalled using the wrong head bolts.
Both heads, the front and rear main covers all have Permatex gasket maker in them.
Shipped with no oil filter on it and the intake ports were all wide open/exposed so that anything and everything that's flying around during storage and shipping can just take up residence inside the motor.
And the entire outside of the engine was spray painted silver to make it 'look' newer.
The lesson here is, don't buy used engines on the internet. New GM warrantied crate engines ONLY (or have a reputable shop build you a nice LSx).
OMG! I hope you paid with a credit card, so you can rescind the transaction. Heavily document the condition with lots of pics too.
Yeah that has all been done thankfully, they want to hit him with a restocking fee and that's just wrong.
This isn't 'a buyer that changed his mind', this a 'completely misrepresented product' and they should be happy that he's even willing to just pay the shipping costs back.
If they push this 'restocking fee' thing I too would use the 'credit card/stop payment' option.

As a seller, I deal with the credit card companies. Don't even try to work out any deal with the salvage yard. Contact your credit card company right now, before it goes down the road any farther. The credit card company will then handle all the rest. Don't delay and lose any credibility. The CC company probably will even force the seller to refund your shipping costs. During the dispute period, you will not have the charge on your billing. Do it today. Don't even think for a minute about being mr. nice guy, because the seller surely isn't.

I have already been in contact w/ my credit card Co. & following what they say.. document what the engine looked like (Marc LS1LT1) took photos.. etc..
I told Cartek to return the motor (I'm willing to pick up the shipping) just to get rid of it..
I'm going to ask Cartek what they want to do (build me a motor or I might go to (Scoggins & Dicky) (sp) they offered to build a stock LS2 or LS3 or an LS2 with a cam..they gave me a lot of choices.. & I'll have to talk to Julio to make the final decision..

Glad to hear you've got the process started. The other options sound like a much better way to go.
I would still just get a new LS3 from Scoggins & Dicky and sell off your heads and other parts. When you start to build a motor, you end up with a bunch of costs that never appear to work their way into the quote. That normally is not an issue with a new crate motor.

Wow, that is garbage! Hope he got it all squared away
