has anyone used or have any info on the magnaflow direct replacement CATs for the corvette? I have a 2005, has 105,00 miles and I replaced the 02 sensors, but im still getting the P0420, basically saying the cat is not efficient. im looking at replacing it, or both casue if ones going out, the other will be going shortly also. looking at either headers anda full system, or just replacing the cats and doing a cat back system. id like to just replace the cats with the magnaflow direct replacements but im not sure if they would a cause a check engine light or not. if I knew for sure they wouldn't, id buy them. they have legal 49 state approved and California approved which makes it sound like they would prolly function properly without and lights. whats your thoughts?
Magnaflow is our "go to" source if we need a good set of high flow cats for any vehicle. Out of all the cats I've installed over the years, Magnaflow definitely has the edge on fit / finish of their product.
If you're getting a 420 code, replacing the 02 sensor will not do you any good. The 02 sensor is actually doing it's job by telling you the catalyst efficient is low. IE: Too much junk passing through the cats.
If you're looking to do a stock style replacement, the Magnaflow cats will work but there will be some fabrication required so pick a good exhaust shop to do the work. Primarily one that has experience working on Corvettes.
One other thing to consider. While cats do have a certain failure rate, more times than not they did not fail on their own. You could possibly have an issue elsewhere that caused your P0420 issue. How old are the plugs / wires on the car? What kind of oil are you using? Fuel filter ever been replaced?
Sometimes if you're missing some maintenance in other areas it can cause the car to send excessive amounts of fuel down the exhaust stream which can also cause your issue.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions, concerns or need some pointers.
car has 105k miles, new plugs and was tuned up. oil is mobil 5w-30. by the way, im not getting the universal style cats, im getting a "direct replacement". there shouldn't be any cutting/welding or modification needed, that what I was told when I called them.
