Default Now I'm really confused.

Thinking of changing the tranny fluid in my '08 coupe. I've read quite a few posts on what fluid to use and seems there is no real consensus as to what to use. DexronIII, DexronVI, ATF, MTF....

The manual only states to use GM's Manual Transmission Fluid and it gives a part number. I'd rather not pay dealer prices for a gallon of fluid. So can someone clear this mess up for me and tell me what is safe to go with in my '08?

There is no mention of changing the fluid in a manual tranny in the manual's maintenance section. Does that mean, "if it ain't broke don't fix it?"

My car has 51k miles and have never had an issue with shifting other than the usual cold shifts and a bit of notchiness.

The only method I know is the ranger way of pulling out the oil from the fill cap.

Owner's manual under Recommended Fluids and Lubricants: For my 06 manual transmission " Dextron-III automatic transmission fluid. Look for the H-specification on the label." I chose Redline Dextron III when I changed mine.

Just found this on on another thread:
"Per GM service news

This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.

DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result."

Does that mean I can go with any Dexron III spec oil?

Just buy the fluid from the dealer and be assured of using the right stuff. Assuming the parts guy doesn't screw up.

The price is not outrageously high. I just bought 13 quarts of Dexron VI for my A6 yesterday and only paid $6/qt. That's less than off-brand fluid at Autozone, etc.

`08 M6 here. I used Red Line D4 ATF at 30K miles. Shouldn't have to touch it again for a long time.
