Default Starter Options - Found Rebuilder

I know there have been a few threads about the solenoids cracking and failing on the C6. My headers did mine in and the main stud fell out of the housing. The best price I found on the starter was nearly $500, and it is a dealer only item. I found a guy here in San Antonio who was able to find the parts to rebuild mine. He also replaced the cheap needle bearings with a bushing that fits the shaft tighter and provides longer life. I know these types of shops are a dying business and some people may not have a repair shop in their area. He said he will do work via the mail if anyone needs their starter repaired/rebuilt. Just sharing with the community with hopes someone will find this thread before dropping nearly 5 bills on a new GM starter. Cost out the door was $72.

Starter works great and is a lot quieter than it was prior.

Shop is Northwest Starter and Alternator - 210-521-0011 @ 7106 Eckhert Rd, San Antonio, TX 78238

Here is my rebuilt unit

Good deal on the Rebuild!! I always try to patronize the local starter/Alternator repair shops.

If your stuck and need a starter, most Auto Parts stors carry remanufactured units for around $130.

I couldn't find any local shops that could get the starter. I tried Auto Zone, Advanced, and O' Reilly's. Which store was able to source it for you?

apparently you have no clue how to search for parts for right around $300 you could have got a small diameter high torque that allows more clerance for headers and has twice the torque for better starts, you also seem to think that everyone is like you and it's a new age idea that they can rebuild a starter or alt. this is the first thread I have seen on a failed/cracked solenoid/starter, sure it wasn't broken on your header install, most likely!

I bought one complete starter through O'Reilly's for $90. and had a solenoid replaced on a different one at a local rebuilder for $40. My dealer was somewhere around $350 IIRC after a 25% discount.

The solenoid problem seems to be showing up more often, now that people are getting more miles on the cars.

I had my starter rebuilt at C&C Electrics here in Phoenix. New armature for $100 out the door. Then I bought a Chinese spare (I also have headers) for $70 to just have as a backup. The Vette was my only car at the time and I needed it to go to work. I can R&R the starter in less than an hour and be on the road.

I guess the guy I dealt with at O'Reilly's was mistaken when he told me he couldnt order it. I didn't push the issue because Advance and Auto Zone said the same thing. I probably should have tried Napa.

There are a lot of areas in the US that don't have rebuild shops anymore. That was the purpose of the thread. Not to mention, $72 for a complete rebuild is a lot cheaper than $300. Stock compression doesn't need a high torque starter - the engine fires immediately. Granted, I live in Texas, so I don't have to deal with cold weather starts.

No, the starter was not damaged during the header install. The starter was off because I did a clutch at the same time. Heat made the plastic brittle and the stud came loose. Apparently you can't read, comprehend what you read, or have no mental capacity to remember what you read because there are others commenting on reading about starter problems in this very thread. This thread was intended to help others, nothing more. If you don't have something to contribute (like posting a link to the high torque unit that might help someone like the guy below) then go troll elsewhere please. Apparently, you suck at finding parts too because he beat you by $200 on a high torque, smaller diameter unit. Wow, you have poor writing skills, poor research skills, no memory, and a nasty attitude. Looks like your in for a tough life there Crazy Cooter.

That is a great price -thanks for posting. Let us know how the fitment goes when you install it. Are you running headers?

I have headers.

I am sorry if I stirred anything up, that was not my intention.

Neither was it my intention. The thread was started just to try to help others. Some people are just vitriolic with no cause or reason.
