It is already torn down and you need pistons. I would just go ahead and do forge internals. This way you can go ahead and do whatever future mods with very little worry about the bottom end. This is just my 2 cents.

That is EXACTLY what I did.. after putting a rod through the side of the block, I got a used LS2 block (very low mileage) and put in a
Forged Callies 4" stroker crank,
FAST 102 intake ... etc...etc..
It will be on the dyno in about two weeks after I put about 300 miles on it...A very similar Cartek engine made almost 500 hp & 480 tq..& both cars have Automatic trans... Cartek Knows How To Build HP !!
im gonna be cutting it close if I throw a manley crank and lunati rods in there but Im getting some more numbers thrown together tomorrow. if I do end up replacing crank/rods, I wanna do stock stroke but maybe a lightened crank?
think im just gonna be re-using the stock rods and crank. new bearings though.
Its not a bad idea...you "WILL" save quite a bit of $$ by using the stock crank, & rods.... & you can still make a lot of HP with only Kooks Headers, and a FAST 102 intake... Keep it within your budget...
I do have the factory LS2 heads for sale now, my fried who was looking to buy them dosnt want them since he may be selling his car in the spring. id like to get $450 for the heads and $100 for the stock intake manifold.
I decided to go to MORE CI.. and am picking up my 403 ci Cartek motor on Wed. It has all the good parts..Callies Crankshaft 4" stroker. Manley connecting rods, Weisco pistons, all forged.... Melling oil pump FAST 102 intake.. etc...
I just don't like NO2, and thought by not going that route I'd be safer...
Jpee... I didn't know you were still rebuilding.. I thought you were back in the road a while ago.. man, what a trip with your engine issues.. .Hope you are well. OP.. best of luck with your build. I agree with the 'keep in your budget' advice. It's really easy to watch the price tag just go $$$ >>$$$$ >> $$$$$$ in a hurry when you got it all apart...
Naaaa I don't have $$ to burn, and (maybe I'm wrong here in my thinking) but I'd rather spend a few or maybe more than a few $$ & get a FORGED 403 ci motor, and have confidence in knowing I can go to 7000 rpm & not worry about putting a rod through the side of the block...
It should make 500 hp to the rear wheels, and I'm using an Automtic...& it should also have good street manors, as I did NOT go CRAZY on my cam selection...
It should be a good DD and still be capable of running in the 10 sec zone...
well the FAST intakes are out there in price, everyone has one and I wanna be different. I know the fast's are very high quality though. in regards to the intake manifold vs. rods, the car is getting an intake manifold regardless. yes rods would be nice but this is not gonna be a track car, just a fun DD'able car.
made a trip out to summit racing today, spent a load of money but I now have all my parts for engine assembley, minus piston and rings, crank and rod bearings which will be here this week. just wanted to give you guys the update and I have a question about the OEM oil pan gasket. the stock one is riveted on and the one I got didn't come with rivits, do yous usually rivet it back on or let it go?
ok good deal. also, I bought a set of Davis Unified Ignition LiveWires C9LSBL spark plug wires but I noticed they have a long coil stick for the spark plug. will these work? they clear the headers from looking at them by holding the headers up and everything. I also bought the socks for the plug wires.
well I encountered a problem during piston to rod assembly. the wrist pins that were supplied with the race tec pistons I ordered are .097 in diameter and a little shorter than the stock ones, the stock pins measure .095. the pins that were supplied with the pistons wont fit into the connecting rod, what is needed here? can the machine shop hone out the bushing on the rod?
got new eagle 6.100 rods, she got this far until I realized they sent the wrong double roller timing chain kit with the oil pump, new chain/gears will be here Tuesday, motor SHOULD be in the car this week yet! maybe running this week end! BTW the set they sent me was not designed for the cam sensor, when I tried to install the front cover and push the cam sensor in, it hit the gear. I found the right one I needed though. still had to dremel the front engine cover to make the oil pump fit but im very happy with it, I cleaned it up and polished the inside of the cover and looks awesome!
