You guys have posted some good info and have me thinking more about my converter choice. I am also still thinking about dropping my rear end gears too. I'd love to hear more from guys that did drop a gear and what effect it had on their ET's.
Thanks!
Subfloor has verified that the swap from a 2.56 to a 3.42 and the opposite way has resulted in a .1 second difference in the 1/4 mile. Since no other ratios utilize the full power band, they won't produce as much change.

The caveat to that is it's still a very worthwhile mod even if your car never sees a minute of track time. When I had to run 2.56s in the car those couple of times, even with all the power I'm making the car actually felt sluggish driving around town.

I have heard that quite a bit actually. While improvements were marginal the fun factor on the street is substantial. That is one more thing that makes me feel like going for the gear drop.
And if my converter is holding me back a bit then the gear swap might be a little more beneficial for me especially in that I am not making big power numbers.
And then there is the question of going to the 3.42 or holding back a bit with the 3.15.

The 3.42's make the car feel better all around. Enjoyment while driving is priority number 1.
I picked up a 3.42 geared rear end a few months ago. I didn't pay much for it, but it was out of an 06 Z51 model that had a standard transmission. So the pinion gear spline is just a 27 tooth spline. So I don't think it will work with my A6 trany.
It might make a good core though for a gear swap that will allow it to bolt in.
Any recommendations on companies that can swap out the gears?
And I wonder if the ring gear is the same but only the pinion gear is different?

That I'm not certain of but I do know that even if it is, by the time you bought all the other needed parts you would end up spending WAY more than if you just found a used Z06 differential.
