Not sure if what I'm experiencing is a protection feature or something is wrong with the transmission or its controls but I'm hoping that some of the experienced guys in here will recognize the symptom.
2008 Base Coupe 41k miles- Reprogrammed with Diablo i1000 to 93 octane canned tune with moderate shift rate added.
I drive the car in Sport mode all the time but almost never use the shift paddles. It happens with Traction and Stabilization controls at default settings (engaged).
Accelerating very hard (approx 90%) when I feel the rear tires break free I let off the accelerator just enough to get the tires to grab again and then instantly roll back into the throttle but it feels like the car is in neutral, a lot of engine RPM but zero pull. I then roll all the way out the throttle for a second and get back in the gas and off it goes pulling hard again.
Does this sound normal for this car (I've only owned it about 4 months) or am I experiencing a tranny problem?
I've tried to test all the gears individually in Sport Mode using the paddles but all the gears fell strong and pull hard.
I have not pulled the tune back out yet. I was hoping that someone would shed some light that it is a known issue not related to the canned tune.
That is on my list of troubleshooting items if I come up blank here.
Thank you for the reply.
Without a total understanding of how that tune functions, I doubt anyone here can diagnose your problem. As a general rule, people who use the canned tuning software don't know how it works. I'd suggest you go back to the stock tune. If the problem persists, I can offer an explanation. If the problem goes away, you know it's a tune issue and not the trans itself.
Sounds like a traction control issue, actually. Do you get a message saying it was engaged? Going back to original tune--easy enough with Diablo, sounds like a good idea. If the problem goes away, contact them.
Appears to still do it with the stock tune put back in the car. You had an idea?
When you back off because you recognize wheel spin, the trans is seeing a MPH that is in the range for an upshift as long as the throttle position is not significant. So the trans begins the shift process. Then when you hit the pedal again, the signal is sent that you want to downshift, since the wheel speed is now lower. What happens is the time required to complete the shifts, both up and down, has overlapped and it's in a temporary state of limbo.
The one thing that makes this condition far more likely, is the fluid temperature. Until the trans temp is above 140 (160 is better) avoid any hard acceleration, due to longer times needed to complete shifts.
So the bottom line is don't play hard with cold fluids and if you get wheelspin, either drive through it or take the safer approach and back out completely.
I had a similar issue on my '13 A6. I had a tune on it at the time and the issue was similar to what you said - I would lift between the 1-2 and then it would rev out on the 2-3 as if it was going to neutral.
Brought it to my tuner after I noticed this issue and he made some adjustments which have eliminated the issue. I honestly don't know what he changed, and even if I did I don't think I'd be much help as I haven't ever messed with HPTuners.
Not sure what transmission options you have in the Diablo tuner, but in my experience a quality dyno/street tune from a reputable shop who will drive your car and get it exactly where you want it is worth the extra cost incurred.
