Started engine after engine swap and procharger install. and no oil pressure. Has a melling high volume pump. Was working fine when pulled from other car. Started the car, ran in for a few seconds before I noticed it had no pressure. Checked oil filter and no oil was in it. Yes it does have oil also. So I don't know what else I should check now. Any suggestions?
There is a process to priming new oil pumps. Lots of mechanics use Vaseline to pack in the pump to help prime it for the first startup. If you don't, you could have this problem.
It was a long block pulled out of my 99 c5. Had no oil pressure issues when pulled. But I don everything I know to do before dropping pan with no luck. So I'm dropping pan now.
In the days of distributor ignition systems, the bottom of the distributor fitted to the top of the oil pump. Prior to starting a fresh engine, the oil pump could be primed using a long handle-less screw driver chucked into a drill motor and spun until we had pressure. Unfortunately with the LS series motors, maybe the only alternative is to pack the oil pump with Vaseline as Slow-Goat recommends.
An LS can and should be primed if it's a new build or sat without oil for a while. With my new engine I primed it and packed the pump with Vaseline. This way you get instant pressure on startup and don't risk any damage.
I know few prime them and will say so. I'm just stating my opinion and what I think is the safest option.
