I'm replacing the timing chain in my LS2 and want to confirm that the oil pan needs to be dropped to get the oil pump out. I have researched some and have found that the timing chain is behind the pump. So to get to the chain the pump must be remove, and to remove the pump the pan has to be dropped. Is this correct? An help offered is appreciated.

The pan doesn't have to be completely dropped but typically it makes it easier if it is loose.
You will have to remove the hold down for the pickup tube when you pull the pump. Also MAKE SURE THE O-RING SEAL IS NOT SMASHED WHEN IT GOES TOGETHER. If you pinch that seal on the pickup tube it will loose almost all oil pressure when you go together with it and you start over.

Thanks Anthony for the link. I will study it more when time permits. But the jist of it is that the pickup tube just remains in the pan after removing it from the pump. Then once the chains are replaced, try to get it back on the pump? I can see that being a pain with space constraints, but its possible?
Stopped in to report that it is a piece of cake. I worried about this for no reason. Just remove the bolt to the pick up, and press down on it slightly to break the seal to the pump, then remove the four pumps to the pump and separate the two parts. Easy enough. Here is a pict....
