Intermittent start problem C6
I have a 2012 GS with 3100 miles on it, and I have had start problems right from the gitgo. (I took delivery last January 2013). First, in extremely cold weather, it will not start. It will crank like crazy but not fire. (Battery fully charged and cables clean and tight.) (In the winter it is in storage and on a Corvette battery tender ALL THE TIME.) Then during the warm weather, such as now, it will start up cold with no problem. But if I drive it until it warms up (198 coolant and 200+ on oil temp) then shut it down, and let it sit for fifteen minutes, it will SOMETIMES not start. IN fact the last time this occurred I had to wait five hours before it cooled down enough and then it started.
The dealer put a data recorder in it, and then I recorded the codes when the car acted up again. The dealer notified me that the negative ground cable is defective. ACcording to him there is a voltage drop and there is enough to turn the starter motor but not enough for the injectors and fuel pump. That seemed strange to me since this seems to be a temperature related issue. According to the dealer the whole wiring harness needs to be replaced. So far, nobody, as far i know, including the dealer, has ever checked the connections for the ground cable and the positive cable into the starter motor. Could this be THE problem or is it possible to have a defective negative battery cable? I guess my question is this: Does anybody have a clue? Would a bad negative ground cable cause this intermittent start problem? Would it be a temperature sensitive issue? The best advice I got so far is replace the Intake Air Sensor. I guess that is possible, but how likely is it to have a defective IAT on a new car?
Any advice is gratefully appreciated. Thanks. Tom
I'm suspicious of the fuel pump. Sounds like it isn't getting fuel under certain conditions, and we've seen some of those conditions here before and it has been the fuel pump.
See what others have to say over the weekend. Good luck.
