Default Check Engine Light

After my 2008 Z sat in the garage for 3 months I decided it was time to take it out over the weekend and actually drive it this week back and forth to work. After about the second day of driving my check engine light came on. On my way home tonight I stopped by Advance Auto and had them use there reader. The reader they were using would not pull any of the codes. I opened my door and placed the key fob on the front seat while the store employee tried getting the reader to work. Was I supposed to hit the accessory button to activate the OBD Reader?

Yep that would have done the trick.

On the way home tonight I will have Advance check it with me turning on the accessory switch. Hopefully they then will be able to read the code or codes. If it was actually a loose filler cap would the check engine light go off once I tightened the cap or will it have to be eraesed using the OBD Reader?

If its a loose cap I thought it came up telling you to check it on the display.

The car either needs to either be running or accessory mode on to scan.

Well this morning I spent 3 hours at the dealership having the vent valve solenoid replaced. They diagnosed it to be sticking. I was absolutely certain, that because it was related to the emissions it would be covered for 8 years or 100K miles. Well, I was wrong. It is not covered and that little valve cost me over $200 for the complete repair. There was a 2 hour repair charge for replacing a $25 item. Yes my car was on a lift for 2 hours but it actually only took about 15 minutes to replace the part. The other hour and 45 minutes was idle time on the lift. Pretty frustrating!
