So the other day I hit a big puddle of water in the road and hydroplaned. Ended up doing some cosmetic damage but I also fried the starter. If you've smelled burnt electronics you would recognize it instantly.
I pulled the starter and I was in the process of checking the wiring to make sure it was alright. It looks fine but the only thing I'm unsure of is the connections. I read from the positive wire from the battery to the starter but are there any connections from the ground cable to the starter as well or is it grounded directly via the engine block?
I'm positive the engine is fine. There's almost no way the water got into the intake in my setup. When I try to start it the gauges all drop off and lights will go out. If I try to trickle charge the battery it just slowly builds a charge and goes out. If I jump it and try to start it I can hear a relay click repeatedly but no starter movement.
Just wondering if any wires may of shorted out or if it's just the starter causing the issues.
And you put it back in???? Did you get a new starter????
What you are telling us doesn't make sense.
Bill
No it didn't go back in. It's actually in the trunk of the rental car still.
I was just trying to make sense of the starter wiring but I think I figured it out. I have a good positive cable to the battery and the other cable to the alternator is also good so the fuseable link didn't blow if there was one installed. The starter just isn't strong enough to crank the car over with a load applied and probably had water in it which shorted out the car and drained the battery.
I will have to try another store and if they don't have the starter I will have to order one from O'Reilly's which wont be in till Wednesday.
