Default Oil Temp

I was not getting enough oil temp so I just finished this carbon fiber filler piece that is removable. I have a Z06 cooler (old style) and never got over 180. The additives in the oil don't work until you get to around 210, so I kept making plastic ones until I got the temp I wanted and then made the carbon fiber one.

I just wrapped mine in metal duct tape and now it pretty much mirrors the water temp. It's 95*-100* outside here and so far no problems with the oil getting too hot.

I think that it's best to just cover the oil cooler a bit, but not block airflow to the radiator and A/C condenser. A simple squeeze of aluminum foil over part of the oil cooler will do this easily.

The air still comes up from the bottom and there was no impact to water temp. I have a Z07 radiator, that is much larger than than the Z51 or Z06.

I just removed mine and now oil temps are perfect. I don't road race so for a street/drag car no need. Temps come right up to 205F and stay there.

Don't post this in the z06 section or they will whine and complain about ruining the car and how GM knows better and put it there for a reason even if it keeps oil temps too low on a street car.

Good job. What's the average temperature in Trenton in the winter? Maybe that has something to do with your low temp.

That is the problem! 77 today, high 60s Monday winter is really cold! If it gets hot, I just pull it off. I wish it would get hot.

I often wonder why blocking off the airflow to the cooler seems to be the preferred method to controlling the oil temps, rather than installing a simple in-line t-stat.

What's your reasoning behind that choice?

I'm sure it is cost and ease of doing it. Putting a t-stat in the stock lines would be a royal pain, and cost for aftermarket to do it would be $400+ easy.

Exactly! Plus it does look pretty cool.

I did not block off all of it, only 16" in the center. It comes off with two trim panel trees.

Diff cooler works well. My winter project is going to be taking a NACA and putting it my APR diffuser with an aftermarket cooler. That whole diff project ended up costing me a fortune because I ended up building a whole diff out of new parts with a Quaife carrier.

I don't know how to post pictures from my iPad, but I have posted them on the forum before.

It is 90 degrees out and my oil temp is 216 degrees in normal city driving with the filler in place.

It actually looks pretty easy to me. Maybe I'll be saying otherwise after I do it this winter.

They really aren't very expensive. At least this brand isn't at under $54, and I suspect many CF vendors prices are similar.

Good info HOXXOH!

I spent an hour on it and got the carbon fiber for free, so I may run it for a while.
