I am looking to go with forged internals for my 12 GS LS3. What are the pros and cons of having a reputable local engine shop re-build the stock block vs. purchasing a "crate" shortblock from one of the national suppliers ? This assumes all the components are the best stuff and comparable.

it depends if they have a good history with building big power reliable LS engines,Torque plates for your block and all.. If they know what they are doing, have some nice ls motors under their belt and you trust them go for it..
If not i can set you up with a awesome forgedshortblock/longblock
Depends on where you are. If you are in Michigan or Houston there probably is a ton of good local builders. If you live in Arizona/Utah then I would get something built out of state. You need to research the local shops and see their experience.

Well put!
I used this company in Wisconsin. They built the NASCAR Spec, LS engines.
