The key/lock to open the trunk is mechanical and should work regardless if the car or fob has power. If you aren’t able to open the trunk with the key, something else is wrong.
Sounds like a dead battery as to why it won't unlock. Have no idea why the key won't work, it has nothing to do with the electrics on the car, are you turning the key a full turn till it stops?
If the battery is dead and your key won't work in the hatch then you'll have to get a locksmith to wedge the window open and reach in with a hook to the release lever on the floor, then you can open the hood and change the battery.
If the key isn't turning you may have dirt in the lock. There is a lot of highway grit that gets sucked onto the back of the car and it does get into the lock. Try spraying some WD40 in the lock cylinder to see if you can free it up.
I had the passenger window down about 1.5 inches. Bent a coat hanger and pulled the release. Battery was dead. Rolled it out of the driveway(figuring I could call a tow truck if I could not fire it up) , and fired it in reverse.
Thanks for all your help. Oh, have NO idea why the key would not work, but will find out today.
