I read a post in the General Discussion Forum regarding replacing the mufflers with sections of straight pipe and questioned if this would increase or decrease power. I realize it's a less expensive compared to an axle back system but also know back pressure has an impact on power so I would appreciate some feedback from those that has taken this path as opposed to investing in a axle back system. I'm thinking if it works more would be going with this method as opposed to investing in a cat back system
Joe thanks for the reply ... I thought there had to be a reason more were not going with the more economical way of altering their exhaust.
I tried the magna flow 14336 mufflers to start...they were ok, not great, when I had manifolds but when I installed headers the drone drove me crazy on the highway. Our cars have a drone at 1800 rpm or so that will make you deaf if you don't have a properly designed muffler system to squelch it.
I went with QTP cutouts 7 years ago and love them. I just installed the new wireless fob remote to open and close them, demonstrated them to a friend just yesterday. They are great, stock quiet when you need to be quiet, nice and loud, including a great sound in the cabin (which you don't get with the NPP/Z06 mufflers) and have a much deeper sound than the NPP/Z06 solution which sounds raspy to me.
Had QTP cutouts installed by Florida Performance in Fort Lauderdale. Overall very pleased with the job Rob, the shop owner, did. This was his first C6 and he found a great place to put them and made the custom mandrel bent Y-pipes to maximize flow from the cutouts. We found no way to put them right after the collectors but they fit well by the trans. I have the DTE brace too but it wasn't in the way.
Installed the wiring myself along the drivers side rocker panel, behind seat then out the wheel well under the carpet. Removed the rear inner fender and drilled a small hole in the wheel well then ran the wire down to the cutouts. Hardest part is finding a hot wire when the ignition is on on these C6's. I ended up tapping the seat heater fuse as others here have done.
They are loud and DEEP when open at idle. I've actually heard louder exhaust though, I was kind of surprised they are not louder. I think it is because of the turn downs and the fact that I have cats and the pipes are pretty long before the cutouts. On the track they have a nice race car sound - I'd say like Borla Stingers plus 25%. When you open them at a stoplight you will turn heads, that's for sure.
Overall happy with the mod, it gives me quiet during my morning drive but loud when I'm at the track which is what I wanted.
Here is a video of idle with cutouts open and closed. The gain on the mike makes the closed sound much louder than it is, it's really quiet with factory mufflers even with my cam.
I don't seem to hear the drone with mine. When on the highway I travel any where from 75mph to ...... well I'd rather not say (when it's safe). It is definately louder than I thought it would be, but not ear drum blowing. Everyone seems to like the sound and even those who have ridden in it comment on how quiet it becomes when just cruising. Push to go pedal down and it makes noise. Sounds fantastic above 2500 RPM. No regrets here. It is not as loud as the guy around the corner with the Z06 and SLP Loudmouth.
