Default diagnose a/c problem?

was driving in traffic today when a/c (that was blowing COLD) suddenly just started blowing hot air. car was not running hot at all, but stopped to check fan...working fine! checked fan harness plug, not burnt/melted. so I had my friend turn the a/c compressor on and off while I listened. when turning off it made a horrible screeching sound......compressor bad or another issue i'm missing?

I had that happen to me last year. first it was the noise, it went away but still blew cold, then a month or so later the clutch fell off the front of the compressor

mine fell off without warning. I just replaced the compressor. you can try tightening the clutch screw. I think it is something like a t25 torx. you can't swap the clutch while on the car. the compressor has to come out. pull the hoses that attach to the t-stat and the compressor comes out the top. don't follow the manual and drop the frame,

I bought a new ac delco on amazon for @ $300, Freon at napa for $25. I used a hand vacuum pump to suck the air and leak test then topped off the coolant I lost. about 1 1/2 hour total work time.

good luck.
