Had my T56 rebuilt by a reputable forum vendor about 3 years ago. I don't beat on the car excessively, a HPDE here and there but nothing excessive. Transmission has worked fine and continues to do so........

I have purchased a later model diff to replace my 05 and also the required tail housing extension. On removing the old tail housing today I have found this evidence of wear on the inner face of the old tailhousing. Is this normal? Has me a little worried and I want to tackle it whilst apart. Picture three shows there doesn't seem to be anything drastic occurring?

It looks to me like the main gear (2nd?) is contacting the inner face of the extension housing and most likely will do the same on the new one. Is it a shim issue? Clearance? Is something missing?

Any pointers or help gratefully appreciated before I contact the rebuilders who assembled it?

Thanks
LA

Doesn't look right to me. When I had mine out it did not look like that.

That typically happens when the reverse gear snap ring has broken and the gear gets into the case. The tail housing does not appear to be damaged the where it needed to be replaced but I'm just judging by the picture so cant be 100%

Your current reverse gear looks to be perfectly ok so there should not be any issue when installing the new tail housing.

Shane,

Thanks for the reply.

My assessment was that this damage must have occurred prior to the transmission being rebuilt. It is only superficial surface damage and it definately has not occurred in my ownership. As you say, there is no marking at all on the gear and (although not in the photo) there is no swarf in the case.

The transmission works perfectly and perfectly quiet.

This end case has been reused following a previous rebuild - as in it was a core. I'm perfectly happy with that. Hearing it from you guys is an extra warm fuzzy feeling

Thanks again......
