Default No need for catch can

I’m getting my 427 vette built to 600+hp. In talking with 2 reputable tuners about the build both have told me the catch can i put on my list is not really needed with my dry sump setup. Only if i drag race or autocross weekly would it be recommended. I take in about 3 drag races a summer and 1 or 2 autocross’s, nothing serious. I was told not to bother with a catch can, no need. However on this forum it sounds like if you don’t have one your going to ruin your engine, so whats the deal with all the catch can hype?

Ruin your engine without a catch can? If that were the case, I doubt gm would give you a 100k mile warranty.

The catch can does trap oil that would normally accumulate in your intake manifold with the added benefit of positive crankcase ventilation. Some of the oil that accumulates in the intake works its way into the cylinders leaving deposits in the engine, coating the tops of the pistons and valves. When I installed mine, I find I get as much accumulation in the catchcan during normal driving as I do at hpde.

If you search the archives, you'll find a lot of supporting evidence regarding their effectiveness. I think the SpinMonster has uncovered convincing arguments for their use, he actually tore down motors with and without catch cans and provided photographic evidence. For me, it just made sense. Engine oil, even Mobil One, isn't going to burn as clean as premium fuel Chevron.

Mine is an Elite Engineering catch can, I found it to be a quality product and excellent customer support.

I was convinced seeing an LS3 manifold off a stock engine with like 30k miles on it. It looked like oil had possibly pooled in the intake and baked solid. Can't possibly help with air flow.

no my avatar is a 2011 GS, I haven’t gotten around to changing it. Thats a car I should have hung on to but hindsight is 20/20 as we all know. However I love my 427.

It looks like mine except for the fender stripes. Have fun with the four two seven.
