I have a 2012 Coupe and seldom drive the car but this weekend I noticed that a indicator light came on saying "Check Gas Cap" and I stopped and my gas cap was on and the door closed. I cleared it off with the reset button. Has anyone had this problem before?
Yea, very common. It usually means the cap wasn't put on in a way that satisfied the computer. Generally you just need to give it 2 clicks past seated. Don't over tighten or leave too loose.
To add, when you go to put the gas cap back on,
DO NOT PUSH DOWN ON THE CAP WHEN YOU GO TO TURN IT!!!!!!
Just set it in place and turn it clockwise until you get a click or two.
If you push down on the cap, it misaligned the cap side tabs to the neck slots, and instead of the cap tabs grooving into the neck slots to draw the cap in/tighten it to the filler neck, the cap will just clip without being installed correctly. Simply, until you get the hang of it, after you have clicked the cap a click or two, try to pull up on it to make sure that you have it seated correctly.
Also another FYI, when you go to fill the car, turn the fuel pump nozzle to the side with the hose part aimed at the back of the car.
This will insure that you get a full fill before the nozzle clicks off on it own (read once it clicks off, you are done), instead of the nozzle clicking off a couple of time half way through the fill, and you ending up with fuel all over the side of the car by trying to circumvent the auto shut off of the nozzle with the nozzle not aimed correctly when you are filling up the car to begin with.
Also check the O Ring seal in the cap. If its cracked and deteriorated, it can cause the same thing..
Pulling the O ring and just lubing it with some dielectric grease goes a long way as well (if the O ring is still good).
Also have a tweak for when the cap clicks too easy, but since you can get a new cap for under $20 (or have GM replace the cap under #EIO7238 for free), a new shiny gas cap is the better solution.
