I picked up and 06 A6 base with 17k miles on it this weekend and today I noticed a noise from the diff. When I am taking a slow turn. I have read that this is due to the fluid gm used and that if I change the fluid all is peachy. What can I do to ensure it is only the fluid?

Cheapest and easiest thing to do is change the diff fluid. If the noise sounds/feels like a shuttering it's mostly the clutch packs in the differential. If the cars been seating a long time drive it and make a lot of turns and try and work it out.
Just change the fluid I have to change mine every year and a half.
I just got it changed on the 29 of Dec and it was making a ton of noise ,I though the rear was shot but that fluid did the trick.Don't forget to do the figure 8's when it is changed or the noise will only be a little less than it is now.
FYI. I had noise coming from the rear of my 05, and the dealership diagnosed it as differential carrier bearings. They installed a new differential, however a test drive then showed the noise was still there.
It turned out to be loose axle retaining nuts.
This was a common issue back then, especially on the early Z06's.
Worth a check.

Interesting! I thought you had to remove the axle retaining nuts to pull the diff!, but I guess if you pull the upper control arms off, the gap is big enough to pull the axles.
Thanks for the reassurance guys. I am going to see if the dealership will change it for free and if not Im gonna change it with mobil 1 or royal purple because it is readily avail.
"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid."
