Default Starter gear sticking

Hey guys, another issue I'm running into on the swap. Ls7 engine, t56 magnum with the fbody bell housing. I'm running the new camaro style starter with the plug for the signal wire to spin.
When I bump the key, the engine will start to turn but then you just hear that starter spinning. The gear gets stuck in the flywheel but comes right out when I turn the engine over with a ratchet.
I've attached a pic of the starter from the top view. The gap gets wider as it goes down. The gap on the bottom side of the starter is even across.
I have no clue, I thought I remembered that you don't shim ls1 style starters. Any advice is always welcome. Thanks for looking.

Daniel

My bet, based on the limited info, is that the starter and the flywheel are not working together. I would call Mantic and tell then what starter you have.
