Oil pump failure comes to mind.

Sorry 80 miles. Dumb auto correct. I was thinking pump. Is there a sending unit as well. Or maybe a sensor

Yup oil on dipstick. Changed it about 20 miles ago.

Describe "awesome sounds" coming from the motor. If you mean that in a bad way I'd suspect its not a sensor or sending unit but something a little more serious.

Did a new o ring get installed on the oil pick-up tube in the pan?

Buddy said sounds like a lifter tick. When the guy I bought the car from. Changed to gold springs and never changed the lifters.

I don't think the oil pan has ever been off the car.

Check to make sure you have oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. If you're oil pressure sensor was bad you usually tend to set a check engine light. I've seen many oil pumps internally take a dump, since the pressure relief valve stop working. FYI I'm a certified Vette tech most common symptoms I see come through our shop.

Yep, RTV over used and loose bits of it in the oil pan, gets shredded to fine piece that ends up in the oil pump relief valve (past the pick up screen) to stick the piston open, and with the pressure relief valve stuck open, the pump will not make any oil pressure.

And no it does not take much, and few pieces of RTV the size of a pin head is all it takes to stick the valve open in the pump channel.

Low oil pressure and mechanical noises... oil pump probably took a dump. I've been there. If you didn't let it run for more than a few seconds after getting tappy you can probably get away with doing just the pump but personally I would change the cam and lifters as a precaution for your bearings' sake. I don't like the idea of checking with a mechanical gauge as all that means is that you are running a motor potentially dry. Noises means something IS wrong and you should tear it down.

Depending on how long it ran with no oil pressure those bits of metal could be chewed up bearings.

That silvery stuff in your oil is bad news. You've more than likely lost the cam and lifters. My next step would be pulling the motor for a complete teardown and cleanout.
I'd rather err on the side of caution and maybe a grand worth of parts than to risk losing 17 grand for the whole motor

Copper parts are even worse, since this is bronze from the main bearings, and they get chewed up as well.

Not sure who build the motor, but pull the oil pump, dump the oil out of it, then pull the oil relief valve out of the oil pump on a clean towel and look for any pieces of RTV that stuck the piston open (yes piece of RTV the size of pin heads either on the piston parts, or in the channel.

Hence this is what caused the oil pump to fail (not build pressure), and do all the motor damage when the motor was running with no oil pressure.

With any luck the engine block may still be rebuild able at least.
