Hey gents, I have a 2006 m6 and I'm looking to put a mild can on it. There are just so many options to choose from when it comes to picking one. I'm not looking for huge numbers, but something that will help me put a little more distance between me and the 350z's and mustangs. I also would like a decent chop sound at idle. My vette is my daily driver. I would like a can that would place nice at low rpm's. I don't really want to change the springs and all, but will do if needed. Bottom line, can you gents help me choose one? Thanks
To be blunt, you can change out the cam for pretty much sound alone (minor HP gain), or you can change out the cam to pick up major HP instead.
The more HP you pick up top end, the off set is the low end, and can get into bucking problems at low speed driving.
Also, the more lift the cam has, the faster is going to wear out valve springs.
On a high lift cam, figure that the valve springs need to be change out every 35k miles or less, and no these are not OEM springs to start with.
To short bus it, you can pick up HP with LT headers with high flow cats to the tune of around 25HP. Having the intake manifold ported, pick up another 10hp. Having the car tuned, good for another 15HP, all the while on a stock motor that it still good for 200K.
Note, your looking at around 460HP without having to cam, not to mention the TM no longer hobbling the motor of what it will put to the wheel all at once as well.
The downside to going buck wild with a cam, plan on spending a lot of time in the motor changing parts as needed every 20/30K (valve springs being just one of them, plus other parts if you just turned the motor into a rev ranger special where it going to spend it shortened life instead).
I have an ECS Small Blower cam on my daily driver LS2. Bit of chop, and stock driveability. With a bigger cam, you may get another 10hp, but you will not want to deal with driving it every day. Mine still made 425whp with bolt-ons.
Getting more air into the engine (ported or aftermarket intake), out with headers (in my case a ZO6 exhaust system) and a good tune can give you cheap gains nearing 40-45 RWHP. XER273H4 added later gave me 405RWHP. (2007 with an A6). Cam choice was to pass California emissions and not needing a new torque converter. Noticable cam at idle. There are a number of good shops for intake porting (around $200), the cheaper alternative to $900+ for a FAST or AirForce intake. ZO6 exhausts (headers, cats, H pipe, over the axel and Bi-Model mufflers) are plentiful at about $400.

a stock 350Z is under 300hp if your having trouble with that you need to learn how to drive, a good tune will wake your car UP! vengeance racing in cummings Ga would be my choice I also want to cam but i'm not worried about how it sounds at idle so I can in the driveway with my buddies and take idle/sound vids. just want something that still retains drivability my choice was Comp cams 54-424-11 XR265HR-15 LS motors don't like overlap they run better when the valve is closed before the other opens, so I'm going to leave it that way. MY car now MN6 LS2 K&N, roller rockers, full Z06 exhaust, 381 RWHP 379TQ I figure this cam will push me ove 400 RWHP, all this being said if you would USE the search button this subjuct has been discussed 14 million times you ain't the first one

if you go agressive a CAM can net you upwards of 60HP it might not drive nice around town but a cam can really bring some HP
My vote is for the spinmonster cam. It's daily driver friendly and is usually good for 50ish rwhp. It's what I am running in my h/c/fast102 setup. It's specs are 230/234, 612/598, 114+2. There's quite a few threads on the web regarding the spinmonster cam for ls2 and ls3 builds.
