Pulled into the garage after a long road trip, went to put it in Park ... no go. Would shift between R, N & D; wouldn't go into P or S. Was eventually able to get into Park by pressing the shift **** button hard and forcefully 'jiggling' the shifter; it made a 'popping' sound when it went in. A friend has suggested it could be the cable; he says it's a known problem on the C5 & C6s.
If it's something I can easily fix, I will; if not, I'll be taking it to the dealer next week. Any ideas on what it could be and/or I could check would be greatly appreciated.
The common, and best, advice is you need a new shifter. Very common problem with the A6 shifters for some reason. It's a pretty pricey job at the dealer though.
Here's a DIY fix with some related discussion to give you some idea what's involved:

Thank you. I have limited abilities at home these days, between surgery and not having the tools I used to. But I think I can try this DIY tomorrow. If it works, great; if not, I have an appointment set up with the dealer for Monday. Hate having to take it in for something I used to be able to work on myself
Correction, after reading the full thread more carefully, it looks like I will need to replace the shifter and that's something I can't do at home these days. Fortunately, although I'm sure it will still cost me, I know a pretty good dealership that I've dealt with for a few years and their Service Department has always treated me right. Thanks again
