Default 08 shifter not working

drove my 08 home parked it and all was fine. went out yesterday morning and started it up. moved the gear selector to reverse ,nothing ,same in drive. what happened? I have 34000 miles on it. I also have a very good extended warenty.. my biggest worry is how they are going to load it on the tow truck or even move it around if its in park. I tried everything the manuel recommended for getting it to work but it still wont go into a gear. im confused as to what went wrong. thanks for any info..

Auto, I'm assuming?

There's some kind of retainer that breaks or comes loose on those a lot. I've seen 3 or 4 threads on it lately. That would be where I would start (it's just a little plastic part that holds the cable on to the shifter if memory serves--very cheap and not bad to replace)

I see you have a 08, I had my towed to the dealer and they replaced the cable. You have a warranty so use it.I have a 08 and my was stuck in park and it cost me almost $600.00.Get a tow company that has towed corvettes...Good Luck

There are nylon bushings that connect the A6 shift lever to the cable and the cable to the transmission. They seem to be of the age where they are disintegrating because of the hot environment they live in. Depending which end broke and how handy you are around your car, it might still be possible to drive it. If you remove the center console and shift lever, you can grab the cable with your hands (gloved hand after the car has been running a while) and pull/push the cable to get the car into gear, assuming the front bushing is the one that broke (if the end at the transmission broke, you are SOL). That is what I did, then I drove the car to my mechanic.

Two possible fixes. Most auto parts stores and Amazon sell new bushings ... experience with them has been mixed. They cost $10 or so. The other is to buy a new cable ... $40 to $100 depending how much your dealer rips you off.

Installing them depends how handy you are. Doing it yourself on jack stands is probably a couple of hour job. My mechanic charged me an hour ($95) to do it, which was much easier since he had a lift. Other people report dealers charging $500 or more, which I do not get ... it took about 45 minutes.

Good luck.

When my arrived at the dealer a tech got under the rear and moved the shifter into "N" so they could push it inside, a lot easer then removing the console.

Yep, shifter end of the shiftier cable has a plastic grommet that fits inside the end of cable eyelet to connect the cable to the shifter shaft on the bottom passenger side of the shifter itself.

The gommet get old and brittle, fall apart, and the shifter cable is not longer connected to the shiftier shaft.

The hard part is getting to the shifter and cable connection point, but just replacing the failed grommet once you are in that deep with a new one is a snap instead.

As for replacing the entire cable with a new one, not much more work once you are that deep in, but will need to get the car up in the air, since you will need to disconect the cable from the trans side as well.

The white side with orange box is the shifter box side of the cable, and if you look close at the photo, can see the plastic grommit in eyelet of that cable that falls apart over time.

If you decide to replace cable, make sure that you lenght index the cable correctly.
To index the cable correctly, remove the orange box cover on the cable, and once you install the cable both ends, put the shifter **** into park, get under the car and make sure that the trans lever is in park as well, then snap the orange cover back on. Hence the orange cover is the cable length adjuster.

The dealer down here charged me 4 hours labor ($122.00) per hour. I'm not in California...

Yep, shifter linkage lever is on the trans on the driver side for the back of the cable, and the front of the cable hooks to the shifter assembly lever pin on the lower passenger side up in the car.
