Well'p I think I spun a bearing on my LS3 after a few WOT pulls to log the car to adjust the tune. After the last pull the oil pressure is now at 8psi on idle and 17psi at part throttle driving. I pulled the dip stick and oil level was good but the tip of the dip stick did have very slight metal debris on it. I'll be inspecting the oil filter tonight but most likely the engine will need a rebuild.
I've pulled the engine on a bunch of Silverados(LS based) but never a Corvette. So I need a few tips before tackling this down.
Questions:
-Can I pull the engine as a long block or do I need to tear it down to the short block?
-Do I have to remove the A/C condenser?
-Do I have to drop the rack and pinion assembly?
-I'm thrown off by the Torque Tube on this A6, Is it the same as just removing the bolts from a flywheel to the converter?
Any tips/tricks, tools or anything that'll help me make the job much easier is welcomed.
Thanks!
Just opened up the oil filter and it's full of golden/copper shavings. What bearings are golden/copper in the LS3's? Cam bearings?
Either way it's confirmed that I have to pull out the engine now. Any tips/tricks are welcomed.
Well'p rain hasn't been letting me get any good progress today. Im at the point of the rack and pinion part. Did you guys fully remove the rack and pinion or loosened up the crossmember upfront to the point where the engine cleared?
Remove all accessories, rack and pinion, tq tube will unbolt, remove starter and remove bolts from tq converter. Put a jack under the front of the tq tube and take your time, going in you will need to loosen the front cradle bolts and space it down a bit and need a couple guys to get it in.
Geez! I don't know why some people go all through the stuff they do to remove an engine. I was only 69 when I pulled my LS3 A6 out the top in my garage by myself including pulling the whole back end. I unbolted the PS pump and anti-lock brake module and tied them out of the way. The AC compressor got the same treatment and both the radiator and condenser were removed. I never touched the cradle or steering. Other than removing the IM and electrical stuff, the long block slipped out fairly easy, even though it didn't have a lot of extra clearance.
The wife helped with R&R on the hood.
