We bought our '07 m6 coupe with a Billy Boat PRT axle back exhaust. Are we now best off by using their headers and pipes, if we choose to change the rest of the exhaust. What might our hp gains be (ballpark), if we went that route? The car is otherwise stock, no tune.
American Racing headers and kooks seem to make make the most gains. Go with either along with the matching x-pipe and your axle backs will fit right in.
It's hard to say but headers will typically give you between 20-30hp and that makes them the single best "bolt-on" mod
Thank folks. If I am following this correctly, I can buy another brand of headers and pipes and I will not have to replace what I already have?
yes that's right. the aftermarket headers + mid pipe are designed to fit with the oem axle back, and the axle backs are designed to work oem or after market mid sections. my only concern would be diameter. what you have now is likely 2.5 to 3 inches at the joint where your axle back connects. after market headers + mid will be 3 inches and hopefully no one cut things on the axle back side to make it fit. any good muffler shop could easily join the 2 if that's the case though.
I'll check tomorrow, I think this will be my winter project, the timing hardly matters, as the car will not be on the road in our NE Ohio winter anyway.
I'd say headers, X-pipe, and tune. That will provide 35 - 50 HP increase and provide a great platform for future mods (cam, etc.).
Doing a cam without headers / intake mods is, in my opinion, putting the cart before the horse..... the engine's gotta' breathe to be able to benefit from a cam swap!
