Lowered the cradle about 1/2" after removing the upper control arms from their attachment points on the metal frame (May not needed to remove the upper control arms) . Then backed off the cradle nuts to where one thread was showing on the stud. Raised the engine back up and the pan slipped right out. Lowered everything back into place until I'm ready to reassemble. Problem solved! I hope this post will help someone down the line if needing to remove the pan for what ever reason. Thanks for all the input from everyone.
Sorry no before pics. The leaks were at the front of the pan and weeping down the sides. As long as it is off I think I will have it powder coated either red or black. I did notice the casting is porus but not to the point where it looks like it would "seep" through the aluminum.
Think you can loosen the nuts holding the front cradle enough to lower it down? You should be able to get 1/2" or so I'd think
This is exactly what I did. Loosened the cradle nuts to gain another 1/2 inch or so and the pan came right down with a little wiggle getting it past the cross member. When replacing the pan I used a new GM gasket with Permatex Ultra Black in the corners and along the front. Per the instructions from Permatex I finger tightened the pan bolts and waited an hour then torqued everything to spec. I let it set for a couple of days, rechecked the torque (No torque adjustments needed) poured in six quarts of Mobil 1 and a new Mobil 1 filter. Fired it up and let it warm to 180 oil temp. No leaks, everything is good. I will recheck the torque on the pan bolts after a little more run time just to make sure.
