cold air intake

One of the most helpful things you can do to help others help you, is to fill out your profile with as much information about you and your car as you feel comfortable doing. Responding to questions is some much easier when knowing the city/state where you live and the year, model, options, and mods of your car.
Click on my user name (HOXXOH) to get an idea of what works well.
Now back to your question. There are intakes that draw air from under the hood area and they are not cold air intakes (CAI), even though they may advertise and claim to be one. Then there are intakes that are truly CAI's and draw air from outside of the car.
K&N and several others are simply different filters and may include their own housing. i.e. not CAI
If you want real performance gains through an air intake, you can either reduce the filtration, the heat, or both.
You can't really determine benefits by dyno testing, but you can see results on timeslips at the dragstrip. In the stickies at the top of this section you can see 1/4 mile performance results. Most of the cars at the top of each category use the Vararam intake, which is an indication that it works very well. However, the best filtration for your car is the OEM filter setup. Every other system is pretty much a compromise between those two.
For far more reading than you have time to do, click on the search box in the upper right and enter "CAI".

Your current filter gives enough air for a Z06, so it will not have any trouble feeding the LS3.
The only mod I would do....is getting some cool air to it.
If you will do a 'Search' on the subject you can read all day.
You don't have to replace a K&N, but the stock filter is good for 50K miles. It will take a while to get the difference back...plus the K&N will not filter as well as your stock one.
You will get a lot more benefit with the money by taking your wife out to eat.
PS....I see that Hoxxoh has already answered your question.
