Default shift button? ???

Just replaced the bushing where the shifter connects to the cable ( this is on 2008 A6 )my question is now that it's all good, the actual button on the front of the shifter that you pull to put the car in drive is not as smooth, feels like it's sticking just a little before it going in completely. Is there a certain way the pieces on the inside should go ??? thanks for any help or thoughts. Scott

I had to replace my front cable bushing a couple of months ago on the 07 A6. I don't know why the front shifter trigger would be affected by this R/R underneath the shifter assuming you simply lifted the entire shifter module from the console tunnel via the 4-10mm hex nuts. After reconnecting the cable with new plastic bushing to the bottom of the shifter, you have to be careful that you have the shift lever in a position that matches the tranny gear housing lever position at the rear of the car so that the shifter module will sit back down on the tunnel without distorting the shift cable which is very inflexible. If you had done some unnecessary disassembly of the shifter module itself, then that may be where the problem lies.

Ditto, if you remove the side clip from the shift cable front side when playing with the cable, then you need to make sure that both the shifter lever, and the trans lever are in the correct positions before you snap the side cable index length lock into position to lengthen size the cable correctly.

if the rear transmission is placed in the Neutral (out of gear) position, then the console shifter would also need to be in the Neutral position.
