Default Rear end noise I think???

I took my vette out for a drive after sitting for a few weeks. Got up to highway speed and it sounded like the rear wining (real loud). It stopped when I let off the throttle and started back when I have it throttle.? So I parked it and took it out the next day and was fine the whining was real faint but I think it started coming back after driving for a little bit. Does it just need new fluid? Friction modifier? I don't know what to do. It's a 2008 z51 cam only car with 80xxx miles. As far as I know it's never had a rear end service.

You certainly could change gear oil. I can't say it will do anything for whining though, but it might. GM came out with a new oil that doesn't use a separate friction modifier, or you could use Amsoil or Royal Purple heavy duty oils.

Here's an old discussion with all the info you'll need:

I think you should try driving it a little more first, it may just clear up if there is nothing mechanically wrong.

At 80k miles, the diff fluid really should have been changed by now IMHO. For MY2008, it was factory filled with some pretty lousy Mr Goodwrench fluid. MY2009 got the far superior and upgraded DEXRON LS fluid. I would suggest also doing the fluid change and using either the DEXRON LS or AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W90 which I have had excellent success in 2006, 2007 and 2008 corvettes. Do the figure 8s in an empty parking lot afterward. Worth a try to seen if it will reduce the high speed whine.

Haha I might try those figure 8s. Yeah I believe I'm just going to go ahead and do diff fluid with the Amsoil and get the Trans fluid changed also.

I got a buddy getting me some Amsoil to run in my diff. He says Amsoil doesn't make an additive (limited slip fluid). Should I add some to it to be safe or just run the Amsoil?

Amsoil does make an additive. It's called Slip Lock. I add a tube to mine whenever I change the fluid.

Any idea on how much to use? I see it now it comes in a 4oz bottle.

I believe the original TSB from GM called for 8oz. It was later changed to just using the new GM fluid. Which I have no idea how much additive it contains. I use the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 and 1 bottle of the Slip Lock. I have never had chatter or clunking problems.

The whine is something different. I've had it for several years and no fluid change will fix it. I'll see if I can dig up some threads discussing it.

I tried a few different brands and the new gear oil and i was getting peg leg burnouts, so i put in royal purple it has the additive in it, and still got the peg, so i added another tub of additive, now nice fishtail burnouts, still have the slight hum from the ring and pinion, cant hear it with the radio on or racing, when i am 70 maybe wont hear it

Thanks a lot! Yeah if you can find some other threads it would be nice. I have no idea what it could be. I was talking to a guy that tuned mine before and he thought it could have been geared before so it could be a ring and pinion.

Here are 2 I have saved.

I know the noise is an indicator of something "wrong" or should I say something not 100% right? But I've talked to gear/trans shops and they've never seen a catastrophic failure from gear whine. I honestly just deal with it. The exhaust/engine is loud enough to drown it out most of the time and like Mr. Dennis said, with music it's hardly noticeable. If at some point it begins to get worse or there is a change in the way the car drives, I'll attend to it.

Mine started making a similar noise and then finally broke. The RPM stage 3 diff just got dropped off today.
