Default AC system overcharged?

If an AC system has been overcharged will the compressor make any noise? It's cooling properly but I am getting a howling noise under acceleration. No unusual sounds otherwise.
Thanks

AC has a pressure sensor on it, and when over charged, it will kick the system out instead (freon heating up will cause over pressure).

Chances are it either the pulley tension bearing on the way out on the A/C side down at the bottom of the engine for that belt system, or your bearing in the A/C compressor that is going south instead.

If you remove the main belt, and then the main belt tensioner pulley (just the pulley via it center bolt, not the entire tensioner off the front of the motor), this will allow you to reach straight down to the bottom of the motor to take the pressure off the A/C tensioner on the belt, and then spin the pulley off the tension to check and re-grease both pulley bearings. Also, with the main belt off, this allows you to reach under the air intake to remove the idler pulley to re-grease it as well.
Also, take a look at the condition of both belts, and if needed since the main belt is loose, you can replace both belts.

Thanks for your reply, both tensioners are new as are the belts, they were changed when I replaced the balancer last fall using the shotgun approach to get rid of the noise. The compressor pulley spins smoothly as do all the others. I used gatorback belts, maybe they are noisier than the standard design. I'll keep plugging away, hopefully I'll find it and will post back if I find it.

Could be the Harmonic balancer on the way out, or even the A/C clutch giving up the ghost.

Unplug the electrical connector from the AC compressor so the A/C clutch does not engage, and see if it still making the same noise during acceleration.

Bottom left just behind the A/c pulley, with the black connector that plugs into the white socket.

Its got a new ATI balancer, I will unplug the AC compressor and see what happens, looks easier than taking the belt off to isolate it.
Thanks

From personal experience if it does end up being the clutch I'd consider replacing the whole compressor anyways. I replaced just the clutch on mine and now a year later I need to replace the compressor, so I would have been better off just doing the whole thing to begin with.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully it's not the compressor and is something stupid like a ps line vibrating against the frame and only happens under acceleration!
