Hey everyone, I have been getting the Service Vehicle Soon message off and on for the past couple months. I check it every time with my bluetooth OBD scanner and it comes up with nothing. So I went to an autoparts store and borrowed one of their fancier scanners. I get a C0450 code which says there is a problem with my variable effort steering. My steering is sort of loose and jerky feeling a low speeds. It's not that big of a deal to me because it either seems to fix itself or when the message pops up it seems to shut off the system and my steering is just a bit stiffer at lower speeds. Is there any way to just not have the variable effort steering system turn on? I tried just unplugging it, but the message popped up immediately. I'd like for the message to stay away and I'm fine with the steering being a little more stiff at slower speeds. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Not to be snarky, but -- is there a reason you don't want to just get it fixed, instead of disabling it?
No snarkyness taken, but honestly I just had the balancer replaced and don't feel like shelling out the extra money to get something replaced that I can live without.

So you had the balancer replaced, and since they likely moved the steering rack, chances are they did something to the actuator which sits on the rack. Maybe it's just as simple as the connector is not plugged in all the way, or a loose wire or broken wire.
Here is a PDF of the steering component of a service manual to maybe help you troubleshoot and fix it yourself.

Good luck
This is a good thought, but the steering issue was apparent before the balancer was replaced. Thanks for the PDFs I will go through the system with fine tooth comb this weekend and see if I can't fix the issue myself.
