Default Transmission Issues!

Hey guys!

Ive owned my vette for about 6 months now, no issues really to date until now. It is an 08 Z51 6 speed with about 80k and as of yesterday I am having a grinding issue on 4th gear. Every single time I throw 4th in it grinds, it sounds terrible. Once in gear it feels fine..

Also, last night im approaching home and let it coast in 2nd and it sounded like I was dragging metal on the floor... needless to say im super worried right now. Im expecting worst case scenario. Any thoughts?!

Hi RdzQuikSS,

I can understand your frustration with this grinding sound in your Corvette. If you would like to have this looked at by your dealer, I’d be happy to reach out to them on your behalf to arrange a service appointment. Please follow up by private message if this is of interest.

Best,

Sounds like internal trans issues, synchronizer assembly, my guess. Need a expert tanny guy to look at it, IMO.

Coasting in 2nd with clutch in or out?

What does it do when coasting in neutral? Noises? Any differences between clutch in/out? What about coasting in other gears?

Any noises when sitting still, clutch in or out?

My belief is you need to try to figure out where the problem is. It could be torque tube bearings being fried which can make it difficult for synchronizers to do their job.. could be something in transmission. Hard to say.

Patrick at Quality Motor Sports has a great trans/rear end guy. I dont believe he is on site at Quality, but the guy does legit good work for a good price.

Needs to get a little more precise. I'd go check out that guy that rjacobs suggested if he's a real expert. Otherwise, you do have a couple of forum vendors who know a thing or so about trans, LGM and 21st Century. Come back and tell us what you find out it is.

BTW, not that this is the problem, but you do know about doing the "ranger method" for cleaning out the hydraulic clutch fluid, right? If not, do a little search on here for the ranger method.

So I started her up today and as I was about to pull out of the drive way it began to make a loud grinding noise, mind you I was not in any gears. So when that happened I pressed the clutch in and rhe noise stopped. This leads me to believe maybe the clutch isn't disengaging fully?? I just tried the ranger method and cleaned out the fluid... It's fairly clear now but no luck.

I think the clutch is working as it should but you have another problem with either the torque tube bearings and/or trans. Remember that the trans spins through gears and shafts while it is in neutral, and when you depressed the clutch, you stopped that action from happening. So the problem is after the clutch, IMO.

I couldn't agree more! That makes complete sense and its actually a bit of a relief knowing the clutch isn't going to be another issue.

I'm calling the performance shop here this morning to describe to him the new symptom and seeing about taking the vette in tmmr to get started on the repairs

If I had to throw a dart at a dartboard I'd go towards torque tube bearings first.

I came across of a few videos of what the torque tube bearing issue sounds like. Fortunately that sounds nothing like what I'm hearing from mine... In the videos I saw it was more of a popping? Again I'm no expert! Heh

Yeah it's really hard to say without having it in front of me. Either way the transmission and probably torque tube are going to have to come out.. so the shop will figure it out quick enough if they don't already know what it is once they hear it in person. With a stethoscope and an assistant going in/out with clutch, different gears, etc. they should be able to figure out at least where the noise is coming from pretty quickly.
