Default HUD kit question

I bought over the internet one of the HUD kits, which I plan on installing in my 2012 Base Corvette.

I have a question about the wiring harness and the instruction that go along with it. If I remember a while ago someone said the ":Brown wire" was be connected to the # 5 Pin but instead should be connected to the #2 Pin? Can anyone shed light on this for me.

Thanks

I added the HUD a couple years ago and hooked it up as per the instructions provided. I got the kit from Gene Culley.

yep here is the quote from my post way back when ......

I just did mine this week and these are absolutely spot on directions !!

I can only add a few things

1 - Once the cluster is out , pull the foam block out and install the new HUD bezel in the dash first , make sure you have it behind and not on top of the rubber that runs between the dash and the windshield otherwise it will stick up off the dash when you pull it back to lock it in position

2- As you stated connect the HUD wiring as far back on the harness as you can so you have enough length to reach the HUD. Once mine was all connected I taped it all up like the factory as I did not like having all those wires astray

3- Notch the right side of the HUD mount so you can start the 10 mm nut on the stud and just slide the HUD unit under it , once the HUD is in that nut is tough to get started.

4- The instructions for my wiring hookup were clear except when it came to the brown wire , my instructions say Brown "PIN 5" , there are 3 brown wires on that connector one of which has a white stripe so that counts that one out , not sure what pin # they are referencing but on mine it was Brown that was PIN #2 of the cluster connector

5- Plug in the HUD , switches and cluster and try it before you bolt it all back together .

I can't emphasize enough the importance of using a meter to test the connections. My meter's test leads were to big to fit into the connectors so because I was lazy I took a leap of faith , when I hooked it all up for the test guess what ... car would not start ....

I remember reading about a guy who's car would not start after a HUD install and it was the BROWN wire causing it , so I checked the BROWN wire and that was my problem , new connector and all is well ...

thanks for the write up !

I did one about 6 months ago. Also purchased from Cultrag. At the time they did not have the cable in stock, so I was forced to source the cable from a different vendor. I followed the wiring instructions to the letter with no exceptions/alterations and everything worked correctly. But, the wiring IDs came from the alternate vendor BC it was his harness that IDed the wires.

BTW, I do remember a warning about choosing the correct brown wire in the Corvette harness. As mentioned, there is more than one. I believe the correct one almost looks greyish brown.

Yes it is really tough to distinguish the correct brown wire as they are so close in color..I just used the pin out diagram that comes with the kit , that is where I discovered the typo in the directions

Just make sure you plug everything in and turn your key to on just to make sure it all works . If it does I wrapped the wires with black tape just like the factory as I did not want them just laying free behind the gauge cluster

AGREE, AGREE!!!! Another preventative step - Do a continuity check back to the connectors each time you splice a wire. Of all the splices, I had one misfire on continuity so fixed it w/o having to discover a feature didn't work.

And, the followup final test suggested before you button everything up is important as suggested by Dcasole.

Here is another tip if you're doing this for the first time - When you power up to test, all of the settings, including screen brightness power up at zero. The first power up, the screen was blank. I thought there was a hard failure and I started to diagnose, but got lucky and, at one point, tried the screen brightness AND vertical level.
