Normally that means the compressor has gone bad whenever I've had a car that's done that.

Default Ac

I just did a check to see if the clutch engaged on the compressor not at idle. Belts are new and tight

Could be a couple of things
1. Low on charge. Engine speed drops at idle thus compressor slows and pressure drops causing compressor to disengage.
2. Cooling fans have crapped out. Once you start moving you get airflow across the condensor and the system starts working.

Reason inadequate airflow causes the compressor to stop is because the Hi side pressure increases to the limit switch trip point which cuts power to the compressor clutch.

Oversimplified

engine was probably getting hot and air con was disengaged.

or it could be that idle speed doesn't generate enough RPMs to get a lot of cool air.

you didn't mention if the air works when your're moving and maintains a cool temp.

I will agree with the above.

It is either low on charge or is running high discharge due to poor airflow across the condenser. Could be a few things cause that.
