Default Snapping sound from rear

I came into the next century and got a C6 corvette. 2005 6spd. To me it's new. Only 16K miles. Has obviously sat a lot. Been really quiet till the last couple of days. At first I heard a momentary snapping, or plastic type cracking sound under acceleration. Yesterday I heard the sound during some abrupt braking, and then again on acceleration. I know my 200K mi c4 like the back of my hand but haven't raised a wrench to this car yet. Anyone have any knowledge of the C6 and where to start? it's a dual mode suspension tour vs sport selection. Thanks!

From your description it could be the half-shafts. When the interface between the half shaft and the hub is dry and rusty, it can make an audible creak on torque reversal. So it will creak once when you accelerate hard, but not again until you engine brake.

My solution, which has been working well for 100K+ miles, was to lubricate the splines and the flat at the base of the splines (important) with Honda Moly-60. Other people chase the noise with ever-increasing amount of torque on the axle nuts, and even apply Locktite, but I'm not crazy about those solutions.

Shoot they look brand new (car only has 16K mi) with new looking cv boots. was just in the shop too and got an ok on those. How easy to those come apart? Is it a matter of just dropping the half shaft and removing a clip?

I'm referring to the splined shaft that engages the hub, not the CV joint itself. In other words, the shaft that the axle nut threads on to. Here is a description with pictures:

I should add that it's possible that this doesn't address your particular problem. It's difficult to diagnose noises over the internet.

Oh no doubt. I'm familiar with the clicking noises of the wheel bearing hubs on my 88 (replaced more of them than I care to remember. Thanks for the illustrations!! since it happened on a forward and a reverse action it would have to be drivetrain associated if not a weird suspension thing going on. Much appreciated!!
