Default Choosing a Cam

I am looking to do a cam swap on my 2007 base C6 vette with manual transmission. It's stock with 7k miles and my only engine mods are 1 3/4 lt headers, high flow cats, x pipe, corsa exhaust, plugs, headers, and 160 degree t-stat.

I am looking for a cam that has good street manners, good power band, and good sound.

I was also planning to put on a new balancer, balancer bolt, push rods, springs etc. and front engine gasket.

These are the cam packages I'm looking at:

BTR Stage 3 Cam

LS1/2 Stage III Cam 231/242 .617"/.592" 112+2

BTR Stage 2 Cam

LS1/2 Stage II Cam 227/234 .614"/.576" 113+2

Texas Speed Cam

228/232.600"/.600" 112

Some of this is going to depend on your tuner too...so don't leave that part out. A bad tuner can make a small cam hard to drive.

Also it is going to depend on the entire combo on how the car is going to drive, the power it can make, and reliability.

My personal suggestion is our G5X1 on a 112 LSA. Has a great sound to it, easy to tune, drives nice and makes solid power across the board.

LT's, CAI, and this cam an LS2 manual car will typically make around 420-430 rwhp on a Dyno Jet (450-460 with a FAST intake)

The other popular option we have is the G5X3 cam.

Tons of guys are running this on the board in street cars, drag cars, and weekend track cars. Typically with no other mods than what was listed above they make about 10-15 more RWHP than their G5X1 counter parts but really shine if you plan on head and intake later on. it is not un-common for a H/C/I LS2 car to make 490-510 rwhp with this cam setup.

Of course we can always custom grind anything you would like to do, but those two I would say are our most popular.

-I would highly suggest a putting a FAST intake manifold on the LS2 cars, helps both HP and TQ on those cars a lot over the factory intake. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm still trying to decide when I may pull the trigger. I am doing brake and suspension mods now. All the cams above seem good. I don't want to go to big or small

Good advise in this thread. You should call a builder/tuner and tell them your wants and wishes. They would recommend a custom or an off the shelf cam along with what else is needed to support an aftermarket cam.

Otherwise, your going to get 30 different opinions based on what they have in their car.

I went with the BTR 3 cam in my M6, it surges a little at slow speeds every once in a while but honestly it isn't that bad , very manageable with the clutch . I first had the shop spec a custom cam (which was a 227/239 113+3 ) but when i found out the specs (which was a 227/239 113+3 ) I found out that it was a smaller cam then I had been looking at and went with my gut on the stage 3 . My only regret is that I didn't do the stage 4

So my plan is to do the cam, springs, pushrods, rocker trunion, balancer, bolt, gaskets, and then a tune. I figured now would be the time to do it since I put on the exhaust and headers. I don't want to pay for 2 tunes plus I know the harmonic balancer is typically an issue anyway so I might as well get that taken care of. Is there anything I am missing? I may do heads and the intake later on but I am looking for 500 at the wheels max.

Take some advise from a guy who just wanted a "cam". If your planning on doing heads then wait. Do some research on the right head and cam combo that will suit your needs. I pieced mine together and wish that I had took the time and did my heads and cam at one time. Good luck on your journey.

BTR Stage 3. This is also on stock head castings, stock intake, stock injectors, and stock internals. I do plan on new heads, Intake, and bigger injectors later on this year. I was pretty happy with it and the dyno is very selfish when it comes to HP numbers.
