I've got a battery which was less than 8 month old dead as a door nail this morning. I use a black & decker BM3B automatic trickle charger and it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Has anybody else had problem with this particular charge or with any trickle charger not keeping your battery charged?

I haven't ever run into the problem you're describing - - at least as of yet. I use the Battery Tender products and have one both for the battery on our generator and for our C6. You may have a bad trickle charger or the car battery may be bad. I would have the battery charged and load tested to make sure it's still usable. I would also suggest you have the charging system in your car checked - - if you have a leaking diode in the alternator, for example, it will run the battery down in short order. Also, be sure that your charger will maintain a charge on a battery, not just charge it up and then shut off.
I use to sell chargers. The problem you have is common. The charger uses resistance to start and if it gets below "X" volts, the charger won't come on. Take a second battery and connect it in parallel to your battery and then the charger will turn on.
That is the reason why OPTIMA came out with chargers was to address this exact issue.
I used Battery tenders for years but switched when the Ctek chargers came out because they were supposedly better. Both of the Cteks died after couple of years and I'm back to Battery Tenders which have never failed.
I have 6 Ctek chargers on numerous cars for like 10+ years and never had even one issue. My battery in my C6 is 8 years old and still going great because it lives on a Ctek
