I just added a axle back on my base o6 about 150 mile ago and getting a loud ear piercing Shrill as you approach up shift...
So i decided for the price $130.00 im gonna add a X pipe in place of the stock H and see what the result may be..
Just thought i post in case anyone may be interested in the brand of axle back i installed.. Here is a link to both..
Depending on the mufflers, may be pissing in the wind with the new cross over pipe trying to solve the problem with the mufflers.
Corsa and the new Borla muffler do not have any drone or shrill, and may end up have to change to one of these to solve the problem isntead.
And yes, a lot of guys go through the same problem with some strange muffler system they think they are saving money on picking it up the first place, hence ripping it off the car in less than a month, and take a loss on selling it to the next newbie/clueless that will have the same problem with the system as well.
Several members have posted reviews of the Hooker Blackheart axle-back mufflers on this forum, and all of the ones I've seen have been positive. Can you be more specific about the loud shrill sound you are describing? When I hear that description, I think of a high pitch screaming type of sound. Are you just trying to say that they are too loud for your taste?
On the X-pipe - I think you may disappointed if you install that. Most have described X pipes as making their cars even louder.

Well newbie/clueless me is still gonna experiment with the X pipe even tho it 99% will have no effect on the shrill i mentioned... And oh,, i have heard drone from the new Borla...So i guess im not so clueless..

Thanks for asking... The shrill as i described is just as you approach your next up shift when im into the pedal and ear starts ringing. It shifts up and it is gone.
It's high pitched and almost like running a test tone disc to set up a car amp's gain and making your ear's ring..
So hard to describe...

Interesting. Couple more questions if you don't mind. Is this an auto or manual tranny car? What rpm range are you in when the sound is most evident?
I'm curious if the resonators on these mufflers are causing what you are describing. Do the resonators help with in-cabin drone?

As per the drone i have not noticed any..
And my car is a auto and it has a tune and trans tune.
The rpm, duh me as i havent paid to much attention to that. but if memory is correct it is def at or above 2000 rpm.. I'll check tonight or tomorrow when i drive it...
Also i should get more mile's on it to as to see if noise go's away or gets worse...
It is funny you mentioned the resonators as i was thinking possible them.. I saw a older post of a C6 owner running these and he sounded like he had same noise... not sure if his ever stopped or got worse.
Oh just a note this system has a pretty deep tone to them if anyone interested.

Shrill is def between 2000-3000 RPM... My tuner is looking at my log to see how much has changed since i removed stock axle back.. So ill let ya know how much this system changes the tune..
It almost sounds to me that it could be a loose clamp connection and the pipe is acting like a tuning fork when it hits a certain resonance. While you're under the car with the new x-pipe I would double check all the axle-back connections as well.

Im gonna try to get the X PIPE ON THIS weekend.. And ill double check tho band clamps but im sure they were 100% tight... Maybe i should loosen them and try to move the exhaust around a bit and tighten them over... ? Cant hurt...
Here is a link of a guy that sound's like he has same issue.. maybe.
Was going to order these but would like to know if you ever found out about the shrill.
Havent figured it out yet... Was thinking possibly tho's resonators they are using and how their configured on pipe. BUT that was a guess...
Be careful if you order these as HOLLY who is maker of these are always out of stock... As THEY actually dont make them completely..
Far as i know they may just attach the tip's... lol...And as i write this they are out of stock ..So if you ordered today you may receive them by Aug 1st... Their terrible about getting this system made and shipped..
HOLLY crap.. I just looked and their NPP in this set up shows in stock..... wow. took them months to get them ready

Not yet... Been busy... Other member mentioned tuning fork sound and that is better description of my noise.. I was able to visually check system and seems fine. And the band clamps that came with system are as tight as they can go..
Local exhaust shop may be on to something tho.. They said get all new band clamps and also undo the tack welded factory one's from the H pipe.. Then undo pipes and add grease and slip back together.. And more important , Apply plenty of oil onto pipe where band clamp tighten's . As they said dry tightening is a issue... Maybe...
