So my friend's 06 would start occasionally, and throw a service charging system message. Got under the car, and saw the starter solenoid post broken. We changed it yesterday, and battery voltage was great.
Today, it wouldn't start, and no lights. He moved the positive battery cable, and it started. Now, it won't start. I saw this under the car yesterday. Could this be the cause?
And yes, we did wrap the starter and solenoid in heat shield to be safe.
Yes, Those cables need to be replaced. A poor connection is the likely cause of the solenoid melting. A bad connection generates a lot of heat which is enough to melt the bakolite the solenoid is made of. I would replace the positive cable from the battery to starter with a new stock cable. Replace the wire that goes to the alternator with a -0 gauge or 2 gauge wire and route directly to the post on the fuse block.
Looks like the copper cable is oxidized really bad causing your current issues.
Sounds like it is mostly the battery or the cable end at the battery. The cable at the starter is not the worst I've ever seen, but it could use some TLC
At the dealer and they want to sell a bundle of wires for the alternator wire. Does anyone know where to get the wire from? Or do I have to buy it all?
can't you just buy a new end , remove old , clean up the wire and install the new one .... I would even probably venture to actually solder it after crimping as I am not a crimping fan ...
Thought about it. Hard to tell the first pic I posted, but some copper strand are broken off. And if I cut to where it looks where all wires are intact, it won't reach the starter. Even now at the stock length, it takes effort to get the alternator wire on the starter post. But I don't know, wiring isn't my strongest knowledge.
Just a guess: is/are those wires "chewed" on? They kind of look it it to me. If so, something needs to be done to prevent it as well as replace/repair.
