Default Cam job without moving the rack????????????

Where's the guy who does the cam without moving the rack. I have some Questions? it seems easier if all you do is want to slip a cam in. all the other stuff done recently.

There is really no way around moving the power steering rack on a cam job. You can lower the cradle and then unbolt the motor mounts and this will possibly get you enough room but never tried it myself. I’ve installed three cams in my garage, removing the rack is not that bad.

There's a guy on here that does it without moving the rack, I agree that moving it isn't that bad. I've went and got the "sickness" I put a cam in last year {a baby} and now I'm waiting for the headers to get delivered, and I was screwing around on line and low and behold a new $400 cam for $250 free shipping. I did every thing else last time seals, springs, oil pump timing chain, sprocket. so if I could just slip the new one in.......

Sliding the rack out of the way doesn't add 45 minutes to the job. I cannot imagine doing it without. Maybe the lowering the cradle method but ouch... You loosen the cradle and then you need an alignment.

The cradle has tight-fitting locating pins. When I've dropped mine, the alignment hasn't shifted.

that would work for hb change in car but not camshaft replacement

Look at comment by RPMExtra -- you still move the rack, just dont unbolt from the steering column.

Yea I agree. I dont see how you would move the rack with it still attached to the steering linkage. Its just one bolt, and make sure your steering wheel dont go upside down and your good.

Be ideal to do both together sense the cradle has to be lowered might as well take the tires off and go for it.

......
I'm one of those people. Changed my camshaft a couple of weeks ago without moving the rack. Changed to an ATI damper last year, same procedure. Need basic tools and 2 jacks, or 1 jack and 1 jack stand.

Should add before, that my c6z is on coil overs.
Remove engine mount nut from the subframe and lift engine with a jack as much as possible. If you've only got 1 jack, place a jack stand under and remove the jack.
Loosen the rear subframe nut as much as you can but keep them in place. Remove the front subframe nuts, watch yourself as the subframe will fall down at the front! Then pull it down as much as you can/think you need.
Now you should have enough room to pull the balancer, oil pump and front cover off. If it's still a tight fit you might have to remove the lower shock mounts to the control arms. I believe that's two 13mm bolts on each side.

Just make sure when you're putting everything back together, that the plastic seal on the steering column goes into the rubber grommet on the firewall. You will need to use the jack to lift the front of the subframe up. Be careful, check that's nothing is in the way as you raise the frame.

Good luck!

I did not lower my cradle to replace my cam or install my mounts on my C6Z. I did have the headers off of the car though.

with the exhaust off you DO NOT need to drop the cradle to install motor mounts, as I'm waiting on my headers mine are going in today!

Im thinking about doing motor mounts this winter. Can I just drop the exhaust and lift the motor up with a jack and have enough room to swap them out?

leave every thing on, your not trying to lift the motor off the mount, your removing the bracket off the side of the block.
