If you are asking about up shifting, like drag strip racing, the automatic trans will shift up faster that you can with a manual trans isntead.

If you mean down shifting, the you can skip gear shift faster with a manual, since with the clutch held in before it time to use the gear, you can go from say 5'th to 2'nd, faster than an auto will downshift through each gear, since the trans is not going to drop down a gear until it motor RPM safe isntead.

Simply, for strip type racing, automatic. For road course work with the stock trans, then manual trans in the vet isntead.

As for in an automatic trans car for say road coarse work, then a couple of mods since you want to keep both hands on the wheel.

The first is to mod the paddle lever connector harnesses, Hence to upshift the trans with the paddels, you want to do this by finger tip pulling back on right lever. To downshift the trans, you want to do this by pulling finger pulling back on the left lever.
AT NO TIME, PUT YOUR THUMB INTO THE STEERING WHEEL TO THUMB PUSH THE LEVERS FORWARD!!!!!
You do this at the apex of a corner, catch the high side inside curb to snap hook the steering wheel and your going to break a thumb.

Here is the mod to make the levers do the above,

The second mod is to change the levers so they a slightly longer and wide to get a better finger tip grip the the lever.

The C6 levers are half way down on the page,

Also, having the the trans tuned for firmer shifts are pretty much a need as well. The trans is still not going to shift down any faster since that is still RPM safe based, but the time when it does actual shift up or down, these can be made stiffer and faster themselves instead.

Now if we get into sequential transmissions, that is a whole different story. Hence clutch is still used to get the car going since it does not use a torque converter, but once you are moving, you don't need to use the clutch to shift either up or down. Hence during the up shift, the engine is blipped via the shifter electronics to allow the trans gears to release and shift into the next gear, as you have the gas peddle pinned to the floor the entire time.

And the reason that the two sequential transmission below are loud with whine, is they use straight cut gears, that are stronger than worm cut drive gears isntead.

C6 still using a shifter lever with sequential transmission.

C6 with sequential transmission, but using paddle shifters isntead.

as an alternative, I can offer soon this version:

In the pictures You see an unpainted version, nearly every paddle can be mounted, they only must have a flat mounting surface. Material is ABS, can be sand, painted etc..
The paddles on the picture are alloy ones which are screwed.
The electric modification can be made by modification of the plugs or like this:

I will test it when my Vette is back from repair
