I'd just suggest getting some practice at the track....which in my opinion would suggest learning to get a 1.9 or 2.0 60 foot....
With a stick automatic it's pretty easy to achieve that 60 foot..
Fwiw..if you've ever been in a real rush but as you looked across the street while at a red light there was a cop...so you try and launch as hard and fast as you can without spinning the tires...
That's really the best way to launch a stock automatic in my opinion..
Drag racing is pretty much lost off the line in a stock car...blowing off the tires on the street makes for a lot of noise etc but it's really a pretty slow way to go and you lose your race.
Consider my suggestion concentrating on a quick quiet launch to get a 1.9 to 2.0 60 ft...
When it comes to torque converters gears etc....that I don't know much about ..just make sure you drive a car with a high stall torque converter and gears before you spend your money..
I didn't care for the change in driving on the street the lazy high stall converters gave ...besides the converter will void your warranty which you stated you didn't want to do...
If I were doing a fun run with a buddy in a mustang....just go have a few laughs..
If it's the latest mustang it ll be a drivers race...if he has the ten speed automatic he will probably take you...but it's no big deal...
If he has a stick shift...most guys at the track don't know how to shift so you might take him out as your car is from the factory..

There are a few things you can do to your car that will make it faster with out living much of a trail BUT check your warranty If is 36 k miles or 3 years which ever comes first you are likely free to mod your car and go fast, the car is more fun when you get past the warranty I killed my warranty is the first mud lol.
I suggest to get headers, porting on your throttle body and match porting on your intake manifold and radius rods installed in it, do the mod to your air filter intake suggested on post 16 then tune it but if you can get yourself a torque converter that will help you a lot off the line.
Yank 3400 pas (or power adder series) is the converter I strongly suggest for several reasons first the A6 transmission makes a lot of heat and a 3600 stall will cause a lot of additional friction and must transmission coolers will not be enough even with a fan on it if you check your trans temps and you most.
The yank Power adder series drives just like a factory converter not making way too much additional friction heat (you still will need the biggest transmission oil cooler you can get in there rite away cause heat kills trans real fast goal is 200 degrees or below.
When you go to the line at the track rear tires with 18 lbs pressure just live the trans in D mode traction control off.
Go past the water two feet stop keep car from rolling do a short burn out then go to the starting line turn on the second light and roll two more inches for a shallow stage.
(This is the big one) you must match the pedal on the last Yellow when it first flash or you'll be way late, if you wait for the green he'll be gone need that early action for both you and the car to react you still be living on the green, most get a good start races are won or lost at the starting line based on driver attention level and performance.

Yank, Circle D, Pro Torque, PI Vigilante PTC are probably the best and most well known if your going to go that route and despite what anybody says get a aftermarket trans cooler it will help keep the tranny in check temp wise and nothing more than a 3600 stall regardless of company because anything above that is for the real gearheads the xtreme guys lol good luck regardless
