only when coasting so it seems there is a backlash issue. I have an aftermarket warranty on this so I am going to have it changed. Question is should I put in a direct replacement (2:73) or go with a shorter gear like a 3:42? It is an 11 GS A6 that I want to autocross on occasion but will also be a daily driver.
More gear will make the car feel more responsive and make the higher gears more usable. The tradeoff is highway cruising rpms will be 300 - 400 rpm higher. For local highway trips, it is a benefit as the car is more responsive in 6th gear. If you take long trips, you may prefer the taller gears.
Shorter gears are fun, I am running 4:10's in my manual C6.
Ya more fuel consumption but if I keep it under 75 I can still see near 26 mpg. Got 25.5 mpg on a 1200 mile trip with some extended 100 mph plus hours.
Hot rodding around town though will have a greater reduction in fuel savings.
