I want to flush my coolant and replace the thermostat in my 2006. I have Service manuals for a 2005 someone gave me. The GM Service manual states that the thermostat is not serviceable separately. It states you have to replace the water pump inlet and thermostat as a unit. Can someone explain this to.me?

Thanks,

The stock oem pump comes with the t-stat. If you want to replace it you can with an aftermarket t-stat. My 08 and your 06 water pump have the same part number. Both the oem and my new replacement pump came with a 187* t-stat which I replaced with a 160*. Just make sure your reprogram the fan when using a lower t-stat.

Not sure I understand your answer, but thank you for responding. I purchased a stock thermostat based off of my VIN from my Chevy service parts guy today. It's a 180* t-stat. I have seen videos of folks just replacing the thermostat. Not the t-stat and housing.

Sorry for the confusion.
Yes, you can replace just the t-stat and use the same housing. On my 08, the t-stat goes on only one way aligning the notch in the t-stat seal with the notch in the housing, t-stat is directional.

earlier LS1 cars had a thermostat that only came with a new housing. Not sure when it changed to the type when you could just change the thermostat and reuse the housing,

GM has same part number for t-stat housing from 2005-2008, so OP should be good to go.
The replacement went fine. The old t-stat was a bit stuck in the housing after 12 years. But I got it out. I used the old thermostat as an example on how to attach the rubber gasket. It looked like the rubber seal had two different sides.
