Hey guys, has anyone had an issue with the lower steering column bearing and steering sensor being pushed out of place? it seems that the slip part of the shaft inside the telescoping slide area must be tight/bound up a bit. This happened to my buddies 2012 grandsport, we removed the column but it all back together and it happened again in 200 miles. im going back in to fix it with a different plan, Ideas?? we only found one other post with a video showing the same problem but no fix...... thank guys
yep its pretty common, happened to me. destroyed the SWPS. i just unpluged it as i track my car and it automatically disables active handing and sets traction control to off. perfect for me.
yes but.....the lower bearing hangs out of place as well, so the whole steering shaft swims around big time. not sure i would track the car that way, regular driving around sure not too worried. But either way, whats the fix to keep the column from pushing itself a part........... its my friends car, going to revisit over vacation next week.
Yes this just happened to me and I was getting a C0710 Code that started the investigation leading me to finding the bearing out of place and the SWPS blown out -
I had the steering column installed by Edwin (Vette specialist mechanic here in SoCal), I purchased a brand new column off of RockAuto - It was not worth it to me to have a bearing hanging out or my Active Handling being disabled ever time I drive the vehicle as well as having the bottom part of the shaft loose and having the excessive play -
The entire steering column was just over $737 -
After Edwin and his son installed the new column all is perfect and good and no more issues and everything is perfect -

It happens if you allow the lower column to expand down to far when you remove the end coupler.
You have to pull the steering column to snap it all back together, but should not have to replace any parts. If you look at the square black plastic plate, will see where the bearing snaps back in, then the steering wheel sensor will snap back into place after that.
yup, just looked at the thread you showed me. I did the exact same thing and it came apart again. im going to have to dig deeper and see why. Time to take the whole carrier apart and see. Thank you very much for your guys help and information.
Check the snap lock on the square plate for the bearing and and tab edges for the sensor snap in points on the plate. It the tab claws are not still sharp, or the tabs are bent outwards for the bearings, then may need to replace the plastic plate. I say may, since a touch of epoxy on the outer bearing race to inside of plastic raceway goes a long way to glue the bearing race so it not ending up coming loose past the snap in tab retainers when you reinstall it, so it not coming loose to shove the sensor down with it as well.
Hence bearing pops out of it socket from worn plastic retainer tabs, and since you the have the snap ring on the sleeve, when the bearing snaps out, it pushes the sensor down and out with it.
So the secret, make sure that the bearing is not going to come loose once you have it seated in the socket via the tabs in the first place. Hell, if the lock tabs are bend outwards but the claw sections still good, then there is enough room around the bottom of the stack to use a Zip type as a retainer band with blocks on the back of the tabs as stand offs as well to keep the tabs pressed inward to hold the bearing in place.
